  1. Dear Black Archives,
We are a group of writers researching pirates’ history, specifically Black Caesar. We respectfully request your assistance in finding more about this remarkable individual. If you could point us in the right direction with any articles, books, or scholars we would greatly appreciate it!

    Thank you for your time
    Sincerely,
    Gerone French

  2. Good Afternoon, my name is Stephany Guinan. I am an architecture graduate student from FIU doing my thesis on the history of Overtown. I was wondering who I need to contact for permission to research historical buildings such as the Sir John and Mary Elizabeth hotel. It would be very helpful since I have not been able to find a lot of information on these places.
If you can please give me a call at 7864439521

  3. Hello-

I am a photo researcher that is putting together a book with a University Of Florida(Tampa) professor about the history of soul music in Florida.
I have a list of musicians and venues that I would like to find photography of. Do you take photo research requests?

    Much thanks, Donna

  4. Greetings,

This is Alex Blencowe, a reporter with the Miami Times. I’m working on a story about Martine Syms’ NITE LIFE mobile art pieces for Locust Projects’ Art on the Move initiative. Her NITE LIFE exhibits are based on Same Cooke’s Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 album. We are hoping to use some archived photos of the Harlem Square Club. Unfortunately I’m running on a very short deadline and would greatly appreciate if someone could get back to me on photo usage/permissions. My cell is 786-218-6252 and email is alexblencowe17@gmail.com. Please feel free to call/text or email at any time with a response and thank you for your time and patience. I look forward to hearing from The Black Archives.

    Best.

  5. Hello,

I’m writing from the documentary radio program American RadioWorks, produced by American Public Media. I wanted to reach out because we are working on a documentary about increasing graduation rates in the U.S., and we are zeroing in on Booker T. Washington High School in Overton.

We are hoping to learn as much as possible about the history of the school, the surrounding neighborhood, and a bit about the history of Overton as well. Can you help us reach someone who would be knowledgeable on the history of the school? Any great resources we should be looking at? Is anyone at The Black Archives available at all to talk briefly over the phone during the next week or two?

Thank you for any information and help, I appreciate your time and consideration.

    All the best,

  6. Hi There!

I would like to come in and do a bit of research on Miami’s social scene during the sixties. Focusing on Overtown and the Harlem Square Club. I see on the website research days are Wednesday and I would love to come in tomorrow if at all possible.

    Thank you,
    Shahini Fakhourie

  7. Good morning,

I am looking for information on Hardieville-when it was ‘started’ in Colored Town/Overtown, and if there were any publicly known brothels between late 1800s into the 1930s in Colored Town? Also, does the archives have any collections that deals with how the jitney service(s) was structured/run for the black communities?
    Best regards.
