Dr. Solomon C. Stinson was the representative for District 2 on the Miami-Dade County School Board. First elected in November 1996, he was re-elected in November, 1998, in November, 2002 and again to a four-year term in November, 2006. He served as School Board Chair from November, 1996 through November, 2010. He retired on November 15, 2010 after serving fifty years with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Dr. Stinson earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Alabama State University, and further completed postgraduate work at the University of Miami and Florida State University, and earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees from the University of Iowa. In 1973-74 he was an Administrative Intern in the Rockefeller Foundation Internship Program for Superintendents in Gary, Indiana and East Orange, New Jersey. Dr. Stinson joined Miami-Dade County Public Schools in 1960 as an elementary teacher at Holmes Elementary School. He became an administrative assistant at Holmes in 1966; assistant principal, Rainbow Park Elementary in 1968; and principal of North Glade Elementary School in 1970. In 1977, Dr. Stinson was appointed Area Line Director for elementary and secondary schools and served in that capacity in the South Central and North Area offices. In 1979, Dr. Stinson became Assistant Superintendent, Bureau of Business Management; Area Superintendent, North Central Area in 1981; Associate Superintendent, Bureau of School Operations in 1986; Senior Associate Superintendent, School Operations, in January 1991; and, in June 1991, was promoted to Deputy Superintendent, School Operations, where he was responsible for the day to day operation of the 275 elementary, middle and senior high schools in the Miami-Dade County Public School System until he retired in July 1996.

Dr. Stinson is an active member of Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Chair of the Trustee Board and Chair of Movers at his church, and a life member #1093 of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In the district, Dr. Stinson served on many committees and task forces. Additionally, he has been an active member of many organizations such as the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Junior Achievement of Greater Miami, the Family Christian Association of America, serving as fundraising campaign chairman, the Board of Directors of Jobs for Miami, and the Board of Directors for Inroads/Miami, Inc. Dr. Stinson is a life member of the Florida Congress of Parents and Teachers (PTA/ PTSA), member and chairperson of the FIU/DCPS Educational Administration Advisory Council, member of the Association of Haitian Educators of Dade (No. 96-10024), a member of the Association of the American Hispanic Educators Association of Dade (AHEAD) and of the Dade County Youth Fair and Exposition Association. He has been a frequent recipient of many awards and recognitions from local, state and national civic and professional organizations.-- Dr. Stinson is the proud father of Kyra M. Harvey, M.D. and has two lovely grandchildren, Dora and Nicholas Harvey, who reside in Atlanta, Georgia.
