Historical Note:

Elliott Scavella (May 30, 1937 - Sept 30 1999) was one of 7 children born to Arthur Francis Scavella and Manette Farquarhson Scavella. He was a graduate of Dorsey Senior High School class of 1955. Upon graduation, he worked as a newscarrier for the Miami Times.

In 1960, he completed a two-year music scholarship at Bethune-Cookman College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. While at Bethune-Cookman College, he was involved with: the Concert Chorale, the Student Government Association, the Men's Senate, YMCA, Canterbury Club, Panhellenic Council, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and editor in chief of the B'Cean Yearbook.

In 1960, after graduating, he was employed by Miami Dade public schools as a teacher at Bethune Elementary. After receiving a Master's degree in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin in 1965, he became a math specialist at Allapattah Elementary. He then was promoted to Area Math Teacher, and from that position, was appointed as the principal at Gladeview, and subsequently, Miami Park and Earlington Heights Elementary Schools. He did further study at the University of Miami towards a doctoral degree in the Educational Leadership Program.

Scavella was president of the Dorsey High School Alumni Association until his death, founded and served as first president of the Bahamian/ American Cultural Club, Inc., was a member of the Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, and a lifetime member of Saint Agnes Episcopal Church.
