Historical Note: Ethel Primus was one of the first African American women to be awarded the Freedom Foundation Award. She was a graduate of Spellman College Morris Brown College, Atlanta University, and Hampton Institute. She worked for the Dade County Board of Public Instruction for 35 years, teaching at James Weldon Johnson Elementary School (originally called Hialeah Elementary), Liberty City Elementary (now called Holmes Elementary). She was principal at James Weldon Johnson Elementary. May 14, 1966 was "Ethel Gates Primus Day" in Hialeah. Ethel G. Primus Park in Hialeah was named after her, inaugurated in 1983.
