Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the papers and artifacts of the Chapman family from 1894 to 1950 acquired during the restoration of the Chapman family home circa 1990.  Dr. William Chapman, patriarch of the Chapman family, was a physician and educator.  The papers include school projects, certificates, diplomas, licenses, deeds, plaques, and a church bulletin. The plaques contain photos and diplomas from Walden University and Meharry Medical College.

Biographical Note

Dr. William A. Chapman, Sr.: First black doctor named to the Florida Board of Health, self-employed, resided in Miami, Florida

Mary Louise Chapman: Wife of Dr. W. A. Chapman, Sr., believed to be a homemaker

Dr. William A. Chapman, Jr.: Son, of Dr. And Mrs. W. A. Chapman, Sr., became a dentist, unknown employment

Wilhelmina Louise Chapman Rhetta: Daughter, of Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Chapman, became a school teacher, employed by Dade County Public Schools
