Newbold family collection, 1978-1990

Brief Description: This collection consists of materials relating to the Newbold Family collected by staff of the Black Archives between 1978 and 1990.  The collection provides information on Stanley and Maud Newbold, newspaper columnist. The bulk of the collection is composed of Maud Newbold's Miami Times column, "Chatter that Matters."  Other types of material contained in the collection include:  a funeral program, an essay by Stanley Newbold, a newspaper article dated November 1990 titled "Newbold Family to be Honored at Black Archives Luncheon," a photograph of Stanley Newbold, and 5 photographs of Maude Newbold taken in Overtown circa 1947 to 1950.

Biographical Note for Newbold family :

Stanley Newbold Sr. was Master of Ceremonies in St. Agnes Episcopal Church, president of three local school P.T.A.'s, treasurer for Mr. Community Club and Miami Is For Me Campaign, judge for the annual Theodore R. Gibson Oratorical Contest, and took part in the TV program, "Legacy," and was a member of the Black Archive's board of trustees.  Stanley's mother was Maud Toote Newbold who arrived in the United States in 1918 from Nassau, Bahamas.

Mr. Newbold was married to Mrs. Pauline Newbold.  Her father was Simeon Humes Sr. 

Stanley and Pauline Newbold's children include:  Shirley Newbold Cannon Funches, Gloria G. Newbold, Maude P. Newbold, Cecil Stanley Newbold Jr., and Stephen Charles Newbold Sr..  Maud Newbold was a Miami Times columnist.  She wrote the "Chatter that Matters" column during the 1970s and 80s.

The family was very active in the St. Agnes Episcopal Church.
