Brief Description: This collection consists of material relating to Marcus Garvey collected by staff of The Black Archives. The bulk of the collection is composed of newspaper clippings and advertisments for celebrations and festivals. The collection also contains a copy of the Jamaican weekly paper The Gleaner dated Friday August 20, 1993; an issue of Prologue, the Journal of National Archives dated 1984; an issue of The Black Scholar Black Culture 1987, Marcus Garvey Special Edition; and a poster of the Jamaican flag with images of Jamaica's national heroes.
Marcus Mosiah Garvey (1887- 1940) was born in Jamaica and came to the United States in 1916 at the age of 28. An orator and polemist, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, having more than 2 million followers by 1919, including Elijah Mohamed, Ho Chi Ming of Vietnam and first president of Ghana, and Kwame NKramh. August 1, is Garvey Day in Jamaica.
