Brief Description: The collection consists of the papers of Dr. Gilbert L. Raiford, professor at the Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work at Barry University, mental health consultant, mitigation expert, and public diplomat. The collection, which is dated from 1950 to 2011, was donated by Raiford in 2012. The collection documents Raiford's career teaching in the field of social work and related areas (psychology, sociology, history, political science, social research, and social welfare policy), activities as a mental health consultant and social worker, experience studying social welfare policies in the United Kingdom as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II, and personal history and family experiences in his hometown of Zuber, Florida. The papers include editorials, correspondence, photographs, clippings (newspaper), reports, articles, speeches, essays, greeting cards, yearbooks, brochures, itineraries, resumes, poetry, obituaries, and flyers. This collection consist mostly of the professional history, but it alson has materials regarding the, Fessenden Academy, and the town of Zuber, Florida.

Biographical Note for Raiford, Gilbert : Gilbert L. Raiford (Gilbert Raiford/Gilbert Lancelot Raiford) is a semi-retired but actively engaged member of the Miami community. He is well known as a professor at the Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work at Barry University. An alumnus of Hampton University, Raiford holds Master's degrees in Educational Sociology and Social Work (the equivalent of two PhDs and an earned doctorate.) He has spent several years teaching courses in social work, psychology, sociology, history, political science, social research, and social welfare policy. In addition, Raiford has served as a mental health consultant in the non-profit sector and a mitigation expert (mental/emotional health).He also worked in public diplomacy for the US State Department and taught on military bases in Europe and Asia. The record contains documents from 1950 to 2011.
